1.0 waste produced on daily basis (in kg)

TESCO Seri Iskandar is one of TESCO’s branches throughout Malaysia. It provides the people here with various type of supply especially foods. Foods that are supply consist from wet food, which mainly consist of meat and fish and fruits and vegetables. These items have expiration dates and the way of disposing this expired items are very crucial to Chemical Engineers so that it is environmental friendly.

A research and interviews have been made with the staff and manager of TESCO Seri Iskandar in order to complete this project successfully. The cooperation given by they are much appreciated as it is the key factor to start the project. From our study, it is estimated that the amount of waste being produced on daily basis by TESCO Seri Iskandar is 300kg. This amount is considered high and if it continues, it will not be good for the environment.

However, the advance of today’s technology has made this problem to be solvable. We can convert the waste into wealth and thus help in improving the quality of our environment. Most of the waste produced will be forming biomass. This biomass can be converted into bio-gas through pyrolysis process. The biomass will be heated in a reactor where oxygen presence will be limited and decomposed to form bio-gas. The products of biomass pyrolysis include bio char, bio-oil and gases including methane, hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide. This bio-gas can be used by industries or the communities. One of the example of usage of bio-gas is in cooking. Therefore, it can be said that these 300kg/day waste produced by TESCO Seri Iskandar will not go to waste but can be converted to wealth.
